Strangely, though, I felt happy while I was reading it. Chinaski, the weary protagonist, is also going through a hard time. I read it at a very difficult time, personally. I was already middle-aged when I read this book for the first time. And while that truth was very disappointing, it was also oddly a relief. What I realised when I read this novel at 18 was that, for the most part, not much happens in life. Stories about adventure and romance, hardship and adversity, struggle and triumph. I can’t pretend to understand how this book affected my consciousness and sensibilities, but I can’t deny this book’s literary influence on me as a fiction writer, many years later.īefore this, the books I read when I was young followed remarkable lives. I read this book so many times when I was in school! I don’t remember any other reading experience that was so powerful and overwhelming. Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong

He is just to the empire's enemies and boldly criticises emperor Justinian. He was a diligent, careful, judicious narrator of facts and developments and shows good powers of description. The whole consists largely of military history, with much information about peoples and places as well, and about special events. The Russians want Alaska back and their only means to achieving this is to get their hands on the contract. The contract states that if the Russians want Alaska back they must pay America an enormous amount of money on or before a given date and now that date is only four weeks away. Unknown to the father there is a secret compartment in the icon that contains a contract between the Americans and the Russians that was signed at the time when Russian sold Alaska to the Americans. So far this is now my second book by Jeffery Archer and much to my surprise I have really enjoyed both of them. In the box were half a dozen books by Jeffery Archer. Then a couple of months ago a neighbour asked me if I would like a box full of books, if not he would take them to the opp shop. I had never read any of his novels, not one. A stand alone novel by Jeffrey Archer first published in 1986.įor no reason I can think I have always dismissed Jeffery Archer’s work. The majority of the side characters are also a treat. They each have their own arc that eventually intersects, as Syd grapples with learning she’s a lesbian and Maddie finds her “I don’t do relationships” stance challenged by everything she feels for Syd. Maddie and Syd are a joy to read from the first page to the last, which is a good thing because they and their relationship drive Jericho, rather than any plot. She and Syd quickly become close friends, but she soon finds that her feelings aren’t strictly friendly when it comes to her stunning, straight new friend. Maddie hasn’t been back in Jericho for long, having taken up her father’s practice after he passed away. Not too long after arriving, she’s pleasantly surprised to learn that the beautiful, personable stranger who helped with her car trouble on the way into town is none other than Maddie Stevenson, Jericho’s local doctor. Syd Murphy’s marriage has fallen apart, so she’s headed to the small town of Jericho, Virginia to set up their local library while she figures out what she wants the rest of her life to look like. Yes, I know, EVERYONE has already read Jericho, but you know what? I hadn’t, and now I’m a believer too. Jericho by Ann McMan is one of the best friends-to-lovers romances you’ll ever read. (No the queen wasn’t at the palace tours aren’t allowed when she is.) It was my ninth trip to the U.K., and I loved every minute of it. I used that time partly to visit the Victoria and Albert and even Buckingham Palace to help me create authentic background for the book. I went on a research trip to England for NANNY, tied in with a writers’ conference for the Historical Novel Society, to which I belong. This time my focus is not a princess or queen, but a lower-class Cockney woman who reared the royal children of an amazing royal dynasty-the family who became known as the Windsors. Although my previous historical novels have been set in Tudor England, I have always been fascinated by the Victorian and Edwardian eras. I have loved writing THE ROYAL NANNY and hope you enjoy reading it. The Diabetes Code is a book written by Dr. this worked well for me and I found that I was washing far fewer dishes from the baking process (1) he encouraged a minimal number of bowls/pots/etc. I found two of Ken Forkish’s techniques to be of particular interest: In this particular instance, I was also interested in baking a bread that would take less time than is normally required to bake sourdough. In addition, I wanted to try baking a bread not dependent on a sourdough starter - it’s not because I don’t like sourdough, but rather to expand my non-sourdough exposure. Having recently read Ken Forkish’s ‘Flour Water Salt Yeast’ book, I had interest in trying a bread based on his techniques/recipes. Not wanting to make it seem like sleeping rough was either cool or magical, Gaiman instead re-shaped the idea as a jaunt through a timeless underworld that lurks beneath London’s streets. The project sprung from the mind of comedian Lenny Henry, who initially tapped Gaiman to write an urban fantasy series set among London’s homeless community. A TV series that comes from a televisual past that now seems to our 21st century eyes like a foreign country, so differently did they do things then. For nigh-on 17 years, the story of Richard Mayhew, a city-boy white-collar worker, who finds himself trapped in London Below in the company of young noblewoman Lady Door and the mysteriously dashing Marquis De Carabas, has been told and retold – but first, it was a TV series. |
